UX/UI Redesign for ADNTRO's Website and Admin Panel

UX Lead Designer for ADNTRO.

Overview

ADNTRO is a biotech company offering DNA sequencing, bioinformatics analysis, and disease prevention through polygenic risk scoring (PRS). In 2022, they were recognized as one of the "10 most important Biotech companies" by Life Sciences Review. Despite their advanced technology, ADNTRO needed a better way to present their data to users in a clear, intuitive, and user-friendly manner.

Problem Statement

In 2020, ADNTRO had cutting-edge technology that delivered highly accurate DNA reports, but the user experience was lacking. The website wasn’t optimized for a general audience and had several issues:

  • Overwhelming DNA Information: While the information was valuable, it was presented in a way that was hard for users to digest.
  • Poor User Interface: The UI was not user-friendly, especially for users with no background in genetics.
  • Cluttered Dashboard: There was no clear structure, making it difficult for users to navigate the data.
  • Non-Mobile Friendly: Screens weren’t optimized for mobile use, limiting accessibility.
  • Inconsistent Visuals: Titles, image styles, and visual hierarchy were inconsistent, leading to confusion.

My Role and Responsibilities

As the UX Lead Designer, I was hired as a freelancer after ADNTRO’s first round of funding. My primary responsibilities were to:

  • Improve the overall user experience across the website.
  • Adapt the structure for mobile devices, ensuring users could easily access the platform from any device.
  • Redesign the administration panel to create a more intuitive and efficient interface for internal users.
  • Revamp the visual design, ensuring consistency across titles, images, and overall hierarchy.

Hired as a freelancer by ADNtro after its first round of funding, my role was:

  • Improve the whole the whole site UX
  • Adapt the structure to the mobile view
  • Redesign the Administration panel
  • Redesign the graphics that the UI would use

Wireframing & Prototyping

I began by developing wireframes to establish a solid structure for the user interface. The focus was on simplifying the way DNA data was presented, ensuring even non-expert users could easily understand the reports. I also placed emphasis on creating a mobile-first design to expand the accessibility of the platform. During the prototyping phase, I created interactive designs that allowed me to gather feedback directly from users. The goal was to create a UI that was so intuitive, users could navigate through the information without needing captions or audio. (Figure 2. Wireframes and UI Design Drafts for ADNTRO)

Design Process

I undertook the complete redesign of ADNTRO’s interface, ensuring the platform delivered a cohesive, modern, and user-friendly experience. Key aspects of the design included:

  • Organized Dashboard: I restructured the dashboard, creating a clear hierarchy that guided users through their genetic reports step by step.
  • Mobile-Optimized Design: I redesigned the platform to be fully responsive, making it easy for users to access their reports on any device.
  • Consistent Visual Style: I introduced a unified design system, ensuring consistency in typography, icons, and graphics across all screens.
  • Simplified Admin Panel: The new admin panel design allowed ADNTRO staff to manage user data and reports more efficiently.

Results

The redesigned ADNTRO platform resulted in a vastly improved user experience, making DNA data more accessible and easier to interpret. Some key outcomes of the redesign included:

  • Increased User Engagement: Users found the interface more intuitive, leading to higher satisfaction and engagement with the platform.
  • Enhanced Mobile Usability: he mobile-optimized design made it easy for users to access their reports on any device, greatly improving accessibility.
  • Cohesive Visual Design: he consistent design elements across the platform helped create a more professional and trustworthy brand image.

ADNTRO remains a project in constant evolution, much like the field of genetics itself. My redesign of the UI/UX was just the first step toward enhancing the platform’s usability and aesthetic appeal. The improved design set the foundation for future iterations that will continue to enhance the user experience.
